Dissent is Lighthouse Tribe's debut album, and a clear sign that this new Scottish indie band remains unafraid to challenge official uncertainty with their very own brand of musical hopefulness.
True to occasion, the album has captured the inimitable verve of new beginnings with a panoply of meticulously crafted tracks, often fusing the visceral power of guitar-driven math rock with the hypnotic textures of chillwave and electronica.
Formed by Tom Berlin (previously of Blue Flux) and Gina Kyloe in 2017, Lighthouse Tribe's exploratory mission became evident from their earliest compositions. Tom's renowned zest for fresh and unusual material met more than a match in Gina's uncompromising vocal style, and together the band soon scaled new heights of inventiveness, unfazed by what styles, conventions or taboos they might breach.
"We were struck by how quickly the first clutch of songs accrued," said Tom. "It was almost scary - in an uplifting way. And both of us knew better than to become too conscious of the process itself. We were flowing, and looking back at that point was not an option. During the creation phase it's all about maintaining momentum."
When the time came to finally review their combined output the band were amazed to find a total of thirteen songs, rough in some places, fully formed in others. Being faced by the luxury of so much choice was one of Gina's favourite moments. "We had stopped counting after a few months," she said. "Deliberately, I guess. I figured there'd be around ten pieces perhaps, but I never brought it up with Tom."
While picking the best songs for the album merely took a relaxed joint voting session, polishing each of the eight recruits to the band's exacting release standard demanded every ounce of patience on offer.
Tom remembered it only too well. "Although this isn't dance music in its pure form, most of our tracks feature a fair few EDM elements. So rhythm matters a lot. And while the electronic side of that mostly relies on a killer kick, I'm also very particular about how this should be lifted to new heights when joined by a classic drum kit. That's a tough trick to pull off, dynamically."
Whatever the mixing challenges, they all helped to make Dissent the vibrant, transparent yet engaging album it is; a befitting testimony to the efforts of a new and highly motivated band like Lighthouse Tribe.
"I loved the surprise of it all coming together so well," said Gina. "Not just the music, but the collaborative spirit, too. We clicked, and I think it shows."

Superbly played "chamber folk" from Denmark. These guys know how to craft a melodic tune! Fav track: Pentamime, which has a very quirky and surprising tonal structure delivered ever so capably. Lighthouse Tribe
